Loopy loopy Floorballers

Maybe it's global warming.
Maybe it's the excruciating mental torture SPM brings.
Maybe it's the fact that SUKPEN'S on Thursday....
Maybe it's because Dubai's going down, and the economy is dwindling down to its final thread....

....that Firebrands floorballers are getting a little....loopy.

Exhibit A

"They're getting married?!"

Exhibit B

"Gather around my chiiildren...heehh...yeesssh...together vee shall take over zee world! Muahahahaa!"-Gary

Exhibit C

"That's right my chiiildren....pass zee ball...hehhh.
..if you manage to pass it 10 tzimes, I will make zee other team do 10 push ups! Kakakakaka..." Gary cackles as he looks on.

The 5-on-5 drill was to test our passing skills
 amidst a sea of defenders.
Don't be fooled though - it tests your math s
kills too.
Let's see - okay, so one actual pass doesn't really equal to one pass. It equals to half a pass. So two passes is equal to one pass.....

1 = 1/2
2 = 1
so 10 passes = 2x10
       = 20 actual passes
Floorballers have to have mental brain power too, y'know...

Exhibit D
(Why do I have so many pictures of Gary)

Gary receiving compliments from Sarah.
"Memang pun..."

Exhibit E

James wearing a muscle tee... (oh wait, no that's actually quite normal)
Seen here waiting during the 2-on-1 drill.

Exhibit F

Gary's in an awfully good mood this week...
.....look, he found someone's underwear lying around on the floor!
"Oh you Frontliners!"

Exhibit G

Joyce in her "keeper helmet".

Exhibit H

Amidst everything around him, Vern Sern manages to flash a peace sign to the camera.
Or does that stand for victory....?

Exhibit I

First game, and Indy's pooped from defending. Period.
Behind him: from the keeper's perspective...

Exhibit J

Ouch. Shaun hurt his arm. Eunice looks on waiting for the ball to come by anyways.

Exhibit K

I like walls, do you like walls?

Exhibit L

Wayne became keeper for a game! The shin guards weren't working for him though.

Okay....so maybe we're not that loopy (it's really just me).

Training ended as usual....
We gotta remember NOT to play dirty (i.e. don't pinch Andrew or something like that), because well, how does that look for the entire club?
And if the ref calls something wrong, just get on with the game. Don't lose your cool.

Let's just try to have fun. :P

In the Name of Floorball

It's the end of November already?? [smacks forehead]

Before I go on: reminder for everyone to pass up their sentences a
bout their performance for the yearbook to Tania ASAP. :)

Anyway.....training yesterday was...as usual...~

"Bet you can't do this...Haiyaa!" - Kuan Yang
"*Sniffs* Yeah, I've seen better..." - Coach Jason

"Run, run as fast as you can - you can't catch me! I'm.....Gary."

Crouching tiger, hidden dragon....

A ghostly figure of Shawn (or is it Sean? Or maybe Shaun? Sorry.
...) during the snakes drill....

I'm not sure since when this started, but we started naming our drills in levels...
I wonder what a video game of floorball would look like...

Major League Floorball? Floorball Tour 2009? Floorball Hero?

Welcome Player 1! Choose your level;

LEVEL 1
Pass the ball, receive, bring it and shoot it into the
 goal.

LEVEL 2
Pass the ball and make a "first-timer" shot into the goal using both backhand and forehand.

"I want a continuous motion from you when you make that shot, Player 1! Do not slow down!"

LEVEL 3
Pass the ball, receive, bring it to the front of the goal....score!

-----GAME OVER------

We also continued our "Quest of the 200-passes" and did Finland passes (I'm guessing they originated from Finland...?) and a 2-on-1 drill in "pairs of three". Quite self-explanatory.

We also played Mini Golf: Floorball Edition.....

5 pairs of players make passes to one another while avoiding the omnipresent defenders at the centre of the court. Much like those little wind mills at mini golf courses. Or the plastic alligators. You know what I mean.

Punishment for making an obstructed pass? Push ups, of course...

We finally had some game time at about 20 minutes to 3.00....

Seniors vs. Seniors + Tania
Juniors vs. Girls

Face off 1

"I got it!" - Tania
with Lisa in the background referee-ing

Interesting footwork, nice passes, and much more team
work....good job guys :)

Juniors and Girls, keep practicing on the technique and playing games till we become the best in Penang.

Always do your best : what you plant now, you harvest later.

Endnote ~

SUKPEN 4-5 December 2009

Paraphrased quotes from the coach:

"If you are on your school team, you are.....not to say forced...but highly encouraged to play for your school, not for this team. Okay, not just encouraged, more like mandatory...."

"We need to come together club-to-club, school-to-school, hand-in-hand to promote floorball on a government level."

"It's not about WINNING, it's about the numbers!"

With that said, play for your school's team (if that's possible), get more friends to join your school's team (even if they haven't touched a floorball stick before) and play in the name of floorball people!

Oh. And did anyone notice how tense Gary looked at practice?

Maybe it was the hair.

Kidding! ;)

NatGeo Presents:

fireBRANDS Floorball Club's training, 14 November 2009, PBSM

It is not uncommon to catch a glimpse of the slowly increasing population of floorballers in Penang, a new spesies of mammals who wield sticks of carbon fibre and somehow find pleasure in doing so.

In this episode of NatGeo Presents (that's pree-sents, not prehh-zhunts), we get a closer look at this growing breed in their natural habitat.

Clad in pink is the rare Eulene, who is said to be rarely spotted among the floorballers.

The males of the spesies indulge in playing around before the rite of training officially begins.

This is a photo of all the floorballers jogging together as a precursor to the day's activities. Note that they are led by an alpha-male (in blue), known to them as the coach-for-the-day and is called Gary.
Their usual coach (odd, how these mammals refer to sports leaders with the same word they use for 'bus') took a backseat as he was unwell, but was still the de facto coach.

Stretching, apparently to warm-up the bodies of these warm-blooded people.

Balance is crucial for them to avoid falling over and tumbling into air and suffering painful landings.

All in a circle =)

Snake.

Cobra.

All under the eye of Coach Gary.

The group of them continued with more drills, to improve skills and teamplay; both very important to face the dangers of the wild.

The two coaches deliberating.

And finally they were set free to run as much as their hearts willed, in a session called game time (which was longer this time!).

Almost full-view of the court. (and that's Joyce there - keeper)

Interesting movement in this shot.

Scuffling for the ball.

And YES, that was a goal!!

Training concluded with the usual sit-around-in-a-circle-and-reflect practice.

And TWO new guys were officially welcomed into the club: Aaron and Frederick :)

So.

Multitask!

Ever heard of 'sambil menyelam minum air'?

Or, how about: sunbathing while floorballing!

Because on this Saturday (7 Nov '09), training'll be at that basketball court along Jalan Delima. Yes, where our 'Pokok Demokrasi' is.

this place..

PBSM is unavailable, that's why. So come to Island Glades and NOT to Air Itam!

But same time yeah. 1-4p.m..

Pray it doesn't rain! Cuz if it's raining at 11a.m. onwards, training's cancelled k.

Come along and feel the heat, as PFL: Division 2 draws nearer..

EDIT: TRAINING IS CANCELLED, cuz there're canopies set up at the basketball court so we can't use it.

"The more you sweat in practice,

the less you bleed in battle."

Back again for another good workout and stinky clothes afterwards.

"The secret is to work less as individuals and more as a team. As a coach, I play not my eleven best, but my best eleven." - Knute Rockne (American football player-coach)

With the ever-present need to play as a team, the top on Coach Jason's list: the players lined up in two columns and...

...passed!

The figure to shoot (haha) for was 200. Once you're done with that, do another 200. Accurate, fast and look before you pass!

Then snakes, and a new drill more to the technical side of teamplay:
1. Two players run past each other.
2. 45-degree pass.
3. Shot.

Protractors, anyone?

After which, 4-on-5 (girls and juniors defending against the guys), a variant of the 2-on-1s usually done. Two teams of guys (the Khanz + Indy, and The Classic Team), two teams of girls & juniors (plus the coach himself).

It allowed the guys room to build up their teamplay, fluidity and expression on court. While the girls & juniors could learn by playing against those better than them.

And finally, the moment we've all been waiting for.
(do take a good look at each of the photos, they were carefully photographed, handpicked and painstakingly uploaded. lol)

The first face-off.

Cool-headed controlling by Deswyn while Per Yue goes in for the snatch.

Free-hit: spot the ball!

Gary attempting to penetrate through.

Beverly (i might've paraphrased a li'l, but roughly): Look at James' face! His expression!

I really like how the focus turned out here.

Indy single-handedly (literally and figuratively) charging by the wall.

Focus also not bad. But blur-ity is clarity of movement :)

The girls and juniors went 3-on-3 and ran with all the energy they could muster (6 outfield makes for a larger-than-life court).

And, cheers for keeper Nicholas Choong who definitely improved his movement, shielding the most part of the goal throughout the entire training. He only called it a day once the cramps started coming, after which Alex sub-ed in.

"I figure practice puts brains into your muscles." - Sam Snead (won 82 PGA Tour events), on golf.

Well then it probably applies to floorball too =)

Debrief!

(Sila teliti hayati foto-foto di bawah ini. Kemudian buat satu karangan tentang faedah-faedah menyertai fireBRANDS Floorball Training. Panjang huraian anda hendaklah lebih kurang 250 patah perkataan. xP)

O (circle)

4 of the Khanz floorballers =D it's real good having 'em here!

Making a point.

Kuan Yang talking about FLOORBALL STICKS.

'konon-nya'

And Alex with the last say.
