Playing to Win
You may have heard "It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game." There is another phrase "It's not whether you win or lose; it's whether you win." Which is true?
There are millions of soccer players in the world; but only one team will win the World Cup. If winning is the only thing, then what about the millions who didn't win the World Cup?
The answer is that winning is very important, but there are other things more important in life. If you play soccer - or any sport - and enjoy being part of the team; get in shape; help your team; learn to cooperate; share the joys - and sorrows - of your teammates - then you are a true winner.
Eric Liddell was an Olympic runner; he sacrificed a possible gold medal because he felt God did not want him to run on Sundays. He lost an earthly reward because he was more concerned about pleasing God than winning a gold medal. Whether you run on Sunday or not is between you and God, but the goal for all of us should be to please God more than anything on this earth.
